Julia Eckhardt (DE) plays new compositions by Andrea Neumann (DE), Chiyoko Szlavnics (CA), Anne Wellmer (DE) and Stevie Wishart (UK).

The four composers, also performers and improvisationists (re)score new and existing compositions written for viola and media. Julia Eckhardt, violist and curator, performs the pieces with a number of composers, according to a process involving the communication between composer and performer as central point.

Andrea Neumann and Anne Wellmer each perform an improvisation. Andrea Neumann plays inside piano. Her exploration of the piano for new sound possibilities has led her to reduce the instrument to its strings, its resonance board and the cast-iron frame. Playing this unmounted ‘leftover’ of a piano, with the help of electronics to amplify and manipulate the sound, she has developed several of her own playing techniques, sounds, and ways for preparing the instrument.

‘tv record’ (for tapes and possibly absent televisions) (2009) by Anne Wellmer, is a collage based on recordings of signals which were generated with analog electronics built in the the seventies. The same signals were used to generate audio and create images on televisions. Partly the material was recorded during a recent residency with Katherine Liberovskaya at the experimental television center Upstate New York.
