Workshop Two Envelopes (percussion and harpsicord) – on the collaboration between musicians and composers
30/06/2019 - 10h - 17h

Workshop/talk + Concert about new music for harpsichord & percussion.

10-17u: luistervoorbeelden uit de geschiedenis van de muziek voor deze bezetting; uitleg over de muziek uit het avondprogramma; bekijken van het klavecimbel en wat er mogelijk is, o.m. aan extended techniques.

This workshop is open for composers and musicians who are interested in reflecting the exchange between musicians and composers. How can the musician nourish the inspiration and knowledge of the composer about the instrumentation and finally be the megaphone of her/his imagination? What is the value of such an intense exchange that is considered not to be a one-way street?
These questions we will approach while talking and questioning about or own work as a Duo for Harpsichord and Percussion.
We start with a compact historical overview on music that has been written for harpsichord since its rediscovery in the beginning of the 20th century in order to zoom in closer on the few pieces written for harpsichord and percussion, while listening to some recordings.
When we understood together why we, Two Envelopes, don’t play this repertoire, we explain our way of working together with young composers of today to discover our own sounds and speech to play on our (also newly self constructed) instruments. We have a look on and a listen to some of the pieces that have been written for us.
Finally we invite the participants to discover the possibilities of applying extended techniques on the harpsichord and to search together for unexpected sounds in combination with the rich colors offered by the percussion-universe.
