in residentie

During the residency I want to work on a new project that continues to revolve around the subject of insomnia.

I would like to to delve deeper into the aspects of certain intermediate states in relation to sound and light. In particular, between sleep and wakefulness, between desperate striving for sleep and the longing to stay awake. How does our auditory sense shift at the brink of each state? When do we hear and when do we listen? Which senses take over when and why? What happens to the perception of time and its loss? What rhythm do our thoughts set? What influence do surrounding noises and changes in light have on our hearing? When does the perception of space alter and what echoes are generated?

How one sleeps, or does not sleep, is deeply intertwined with the world in which we live. Sleep and it’s deprivation becomes more and more political in a world of constant rhythms of production and consumption.

I want to further explore these issues and questions between sleep and wakefulness, between light and darkness, between movement and stasis, between noise and silence, between the concrete and diffusion, between insecurity and assurance.

At the same time, I am interested in the shift in perception and localisation of sound in a space or even several spaces with different characteristics and possible disruptive factors. What happens to sounds that meet in one moment of movement, overlap, entangle and in the next moment resonate only as echoes, as distant memories?

The resonance between the movement of one’s own body in a space and the simultaneous act of listening is highly individual and always has to do with one’s own disposition in the moment.
The aural perception while in motion clearly changes in the state of rest, as well as in the inbetween states of restless sleeplessness.
