STUK, Q-O2 and Musica present a sample of new sound art in Belgium. Six promising sound artists were selected for the Showcase Emerging Sound 2021 at STUK. The showcase shows the diversity of the Belgian sound landscape and gives the next generation of sound artists a boost. Given the circumstances, this year’s showcase will primarily be an expo. The expo will run from Wednesday 12th of until Sunday 16th of May and will feature four installations.
Dominique ‘t Jolle will show her brand new installation Behind the Tune based on her own experience with tinnitus. By moving in and along the work, the listener imagines himself in the head of someone with ear buzzing. In the inner courtyard you can walk past Bling rring by Anne van de Star, a meditative work in which a resounding dialogue is created between two rotating steel rings. aRzu Saglam has a more philosophical approach: in her project Further 5th Phase of De-knowing she observes the behavior of volcanoes through image, sound and text. Finally, Charlie Usher presents his installation Mixed feelings, which makes cultural samples, field recordings, instruments, and timer switches sound from half-unpacked speakers and vintage Leslie speakers.
Besides the exhibition of installations, the opening night will also feature some performances for a limited audience. Percussionist Andrés Navarro García investigates the sonorous qualities of a (amplified) metal plate. Using his bare hands and all kinds of found objects such as stones or pipes, he brings out the most diverse sounds from the plate. In addition, experimental musician Niels Latomme a.k.a. Beyt Al Tapes uses his racing bike for a repetitive performance in which he physically goes to extremes.
