residency
18/08/2017 - 31/08/2017

“Silent city, noisy mind” is a residency that relates to performing a cartography of inner and outer spaces. In summer, when cities across Europe appear empty and quiet, the urban body as a physical organism becomes more audible. At that very moment, it is possible to listen to the sound of the city structure. Walking and exploring, Pia Palme will research into to the inner soundscapes of urban locations and places. Her ear becomes a sensitive instrument to register the aural substructures of the city. Directing listening perception inside, she records the subtle resonance of the city in her own mind – its hidden voices, dark noises, and veiled utterances. In particular, she collects and notates the background noises of the city. This will result in a series of short performances (including texts) that are tied to a specific location and its sonic substructures. Performances in selected locations will be held and recorded to notate a personalised map of the inner and outer sonic strata of the city. Pia Palme finds it interesting to work with (imagined, composed, performed) sound as connected to the more obvious physicality of the urban space.
