A joint residency with La Monnaie | De Munt for the rehearsal and performance of Are These Waves, a new chamber opera for two sopranos and choir.

Are These Waves illuminates the fantastical relationship between love and death in opera, particularly in relation to the fate of women. Voice is the impetus for a structure which interweaves text, light and movement. A distilled narrative, fragmented by repetition and modification, unsettles the balance between perception and reality, highlighting the power of the suspension of disbelief as a tool for the creation of new realities.

Are These Waves will be performed by sopranos Anne-Kathryn Olsen and Carine Tinney of graindelavoix, and members of the Brussels Brecht-Eislerkoor who have collaboratively contributed to their text and been instrumental in the development of the techniques they use.

It will be presented in the framework of La Monnaie | De Munt’s Orfeo & Majnun project which is supported by the European Union’s ‘Creative Europe’ programme.
