The electro-acoustic improvisation E42.A8 is grounded in an old warehouse in the countryside. It is a place with a focus on the conditions that make improvisation possible, a pretext for meeting, but also an end in itself. The place is always open to newcomers so that the configuration of players is therefore always changing. No compositions, no efficiency, but rather free walks between polarities: freedoms-constraints, texture-range, inside-outside, games-interactions, pulse-stretch, moments-intensity, diversion-obviousness, amazement-oblivion, silence-saturation, space-sound +++. E42.A8 is a project that started 5 years ago, in the winter 2013, in a barn/warehouse. The idea was to give a follow-up to a workshop held in a mental hospital, for which we had bought some basic material. What was necessary : having a place for free improvisation. I took what I had under the hand. Over the years and the course of more than 100 sessions, more than 30 participants took part, some occasionally, some regularly. The particularities of the place which was available progressively gave a certain orientation to the project, heavily depending on space (isolated), time (WE), but also surroundings : nature, weather (rediscovering wintertime), distance, means of transportation (train,highway), being-together (meals). This project is now at a turning point, since the place itself will be transformed in 2020/2021, in order to accommodate people and offer a sustainable environment for such activities. Questions around the public aspect of the space arise : is there a will to make this renewed environment a public space ? a space for exhibitions ? concerts ? a playground ? Is there any interest in one more visibility hub, or should we keep the place away from the spectacle and focus on the playing/recording dimensions ? Are they compatible ? How ? The place, distanced from main urban centers as Lille, Bruxelles, Liège, can offer a welcome break from urban pressure, but brings with it the downsides of the distance. How can we reach younger players, people who want to experiment, open them up to improvisation ?
