Hallveig Agustsdottir

“Being fascinated by the relation between music and visual art and not wanting to choose between them, Hallveig Agustsdottir turned to soundscapes in her most recent drawings. She started a quest for an accurate way of depicting music, sounds, noise. Yet this sound-based approach turns out to be a starting point for exploring texture and material. By restricting herself to an artist’s basic materials (paper, charcoal and gesso) she seems to discover freedom within this strict limitation.”From an early age Hallveig Agustsdottir (°1976, Iceland) has been interested in both visual arts and music. In 2000 Hallveig moved to Ghent for further studies and in 2006 she finished a Master in Visual Arts from Sint-Lucas Ghent. It was there where she started working with the combinations of different artistic disciplines, such as visual art, music, and performing arts. Interacting with music in her visual art has taken many forms; from painting to photography to performances, and video works, as well as her own compositions. Her work has also been shown in Z33 Kunstencentrum in Hasselt; selected for the Input/Output competition exhibition at De Bond in Brugge, and for the Prijs Van Asse as well as for the ‘Young Artists (selected by)’ in Ghent; Hallveig also took part in the G.O.V project at the Gasteig Culture Centre in München, Germany and the Society of Composer Inc. National Conference, Greensboro, North Carolina, USA.Hallveig graduated with a Postgraduate diploma in arts, media and design from Transmedia at Sint-Lukas Brussels in 2008; currently she is working on her PhD research in Performing Arts at Brunel University London UK.
