Listening session and book presentation: On Acoustic Territories
Brandon LaBelle

Book presentation of the new edition of Acoustic Territories: Sound Culture and Everyday Life. Author and artist Brandon LaBelle will present his research on sound, agency and notions of acoustic justice, and talk through the new edition of his book.

Acoustic Territories: Sound Culture and Everyday Life offers an expansive reading of auditory life. It provides a careful consideration of the performative dynamics inherent to sounding and listening, and discusses how sound studies may illuminate understandings of contemporary society. Combining research on urbanism, popular culture, street life and sonic technologies, Acoustic Territories opens up a range of critical perspectives, including questions of noise, marginality, acoustic justice and the micropolitics of listening. The book engages such topics by way of a topographic structure, from underground territories to the home, and further, into the rhythms and vibrations of streets and neighborhoods, and finally to the sky itself as an arena of transmitted imaginaries.

After-Program: Cue
Lendl Barcelos

CUE begins simply by recording the usually-unheard cue channel(s) of DJ mixes of invited artists. Listening in on what is pre-listened opens space to hear what a DJ hears in the strange private-public modality of a DJ performance—testing out of tracks, shifts in tempo (for beat matching), multi-layered sound collages— so the seams of the seemingly seamless have become audible. A 2-room spatialization of CUE will be installed for Second Sundays featuring 3 sets.

Second Sundays is a monthly series initiated by Q-O2. Each session a new guest is invited to share an insight into their own listening, playing and speaking about a selection of sound and music that is important to their thinking or practice. The sessions try to put value on listening to recorded music in a social setting as a space for discussion. The series takes place on the second Sunday of every month. Each session is paired with a cocktail-of-the-month, as decided by the invited guest.
