Post-residency presentation: Aminata Soumaré
20/08/2026 - 18h - free

During her residency, Aminata Soumaré explored how rituals rooted in oral traditions can become forms of living sonic memory. Her research emerged from a personal reflection on what it means to inherit a culture passed on through voice and shared practices rather than through written records. Faced with the possibility of gradually losing her connection to her Malian heritage, she began investigating how memories are preserved within the Malian diaspora in Belgium.

Her research revealed a remarkable absence: apart from music, she encountered very few traces documenting the everyday lives, stories and experiences of the Malian community in Belgium. This absence became the point of departure for her performance.

Throughout the residency, she experimented with different forms of archives, each carrying distinct material and sonic qualities. She also explored how recorded samples could be transformed through vibration, resonating with acoustic instruments and objects that hold personal and cultural significance. These experiments became a way of thinking about the archive not as something fixed, but as something that can be activated, reshaped and carried through sound.

The work unfolds as a journey through personal and collective memory, weaving together fragments of voices, field recordings and oral histories. Memories fade and reappear, reflecting the ways in which they are carried across generations. Rather than reconstructing a complete archive, the performance embraces its gaps and imagines how new forms of remembrance can emerge through listening.
