Sacred Harp Singing w/ Francesca Hawker, Marialena Marouda, William Spendlove
15/07/2025 - 17h-20h - free upon registration

Sacred Harp is a tradition of shape-note music originating in 19th century Appalachia. “Shape-note” emerged as a way of teaching people without any formal musical literacy, and without any shared doctrinal commitments, to sing quickly and in large quantities.

In this one-off evening session in Brussels, Francesca Hawker, Marialena Marouda, and William Spendlove want to try singing some Sacred Harp songs with a group, in order to share the tradition with other interested newcomers, as well as to try out some techniques that they can develop for their upcoming sessions ‘Sacred Harp from Scratch, or, Beginners Beginning Beginners’, that they will be delivering as part of the Summer University at the Performing Arts Forum in St. Erme, France, in August.

In the future they are interested to organise more regular sessions in Brussels, so people who are into participating in that should feel especially welcome!
