At Q-O2, I will work on two parallel projects that adopt sound-performance and radio as expanded forms of publishing.
I will develop a solo set for voice and amplified objects focusing on a selection of entries from the « Dictionary of Superstitions » (edited by Iona Opie and Moira Tatem) and « Valtrompia: un’altra storia, » a publication that collects anecdotes and vernaculars specific to the area where I grew up, in the north-east of Italy. With this research, I am interested in exploring the relationship between the systematic and indexical ways in which reference books organize language and the oblique and associative potential of superstitions. Through vocalization and amplification of microsounds emerging from the written text, I will consider the ways in which superstitions exceed their own descriptors and resonate as oral material. This is also an experiment in how the fixed nature of textual records can be destabilised through oral, sonic and translingual interpretation.
Parallel to the development of this performance, I will produce a new episode for aux-sends, a radio series that I host monthly on Vancouver’s co-op radio. The program features sounds, interviews and selections by artists, musicians and researchers working at the intersection of sound art and literature, and takes the form of an audio-journal.
