Thomas Olbrechts
Saxophonist and instant composer Thomas Olbrechts has developed a strong individual musical discourse that plays off rigid saxophone techniques and composition systems against each other. As an alto saxophone player "pur sang" he can be considered as a real autodidact. He is exploring the most diverse dynamics of his instrument, ranging from almost inaudible introvert sounds to screaming sequences, to ways of playing the saxophone which are related to the tradition of jazz or contemporary music. Olbrechts is using microphones to amplify the inside of the saxophone and uses the technique of right & left panning to project his sounds on different speakers. Thomas Olbrechts has been involved in many projects using saxophone, text, installation, sound, computer, video, theory, noise and voice. For several years he worked closely together with the Antwerp based contemporary music ensemble Champ d'Action, performing experimental scores by Cornelius Cardew, James Tenney, Karlheinz Essl, ... He is co-founder of the instant composition ensemble reFLEXible, the Brussels underground trio DRY SPEED, and the electric quintet DRY ELECTRIC. In 2000 he conceived his project LIVENESS, questioning the act of performing in relation to a media-related world. The project contained live clashes between music and television, live cam, pre-recorded sound and -images, random computer manipulations and installations. Olbrechts has been working on STACKMEMORY - an experiment in which a semi-composed piece is resampled over and over, functioning as a live-score to improvise on, until the point where the music reaches a dense orchestral sound in which 6 to 7 layers have been recorded on top of each other. For some years (2014-2016) Olbrechts has mainly been focused on pure solo work.
