1) Lina Lapelyte – Decomposing the mainstream

In this workshop Lina Lapelyte will propose her own music making techniques to collectively create tunes. Using individually or collectively chosen texts, participants will create short performances based on singing and improvising.

2) C. Spencer Yeh – The Sound of My Voice

This workshop includes a discussion and exercises on the topic of extended vocal techniques. C. Spencer Yeh will also introduce various strategies of sonic abstraction, organised sound and improvisation.

3) Pauline Oliveros & IONE – Deep Listening Workshop

Deep Listening® is a process that is informed by expanding the range of audible forms beyond ordinary sound perceptions in daily life. Pauline Oliveros and IONE have worked collaboratively since 1985 and will use the practice of Deep Listening® for improvisation and creativity.
Pauline Oliveros will reference her book “Anthology of Text Scores” (Deep Listening Publications, 2013). She describes Deep Listening® as a way of listening in every possible way to everything possible to hear, no matter what you’re doing. Such intense listening includes the sounds of daily life, of nature, of one’s own thoughts, as well as musical sounds. “Deep Listening is my life practice,” she explains, simply.
The workshop includes an introduction, history and theory. Practice includes energy exercises, listening exercises and movement exercises as invaluable resources for performing musicians, music students and anyone interested in the life work of one of the most unique voices in modern music.

4) Jaume Ferrete – Voz Rara

This theoretical and practical workshop deals with the political dimensions of the voice. The goal of the workshop is to outline a possible voice genealogy and to attempt hybridising the participants’ ideas and practices with others that are critical with the ideologies of voice that traverse us.
The workshop will be tailored to the interests and fields of work of the participants. The session will also include texts by Anne Carson, Amanda Weidman and Jonathan Ree; case studies such as the masculinization of Margaret Thatcher, the Indian call centre phenomenon and Occupy Wall Street’s Human Microphone; technologies such as Joseph Faber’s Euphonia or Bell Lab’s Vocer; as well as fragments of original conversations with people who belong to LGBTQI and”’crip” activism, the TV and film dubbing industry, the academic world, somatic practices and the arts.

5) Simon Vincent – Strategies for composing and improvising in electronic music

In this workshop Simon Vincent will use examples from his own work, including the recently performed “… Falling Man, Rising Woman…” to explain ways of shaping materials for the creation of new compositions and improvisations.

6) OPEN FORUM

Students and artists are invited to contribute to an OPEN FORUM, an informal platform for lectures and presentations. Different types of contributions are welcome as long as the content fits the topic of gender, voice, language, identity and will not exceed a time slot of 30 minutes. If your are interested to actively partake in this event, send your proposal to julia@q-o2.be. Programming happens on a first come first served basis.
