Q-O2 invited seven film- and videomakers to develop a work inspired by the relationship between music and moving image.
The artists could choose music pieces (in consultation with the ensembles), but there was an important condition: the music could not be understood as ‘serving’ but had to be perceived as a starting point and source of inspiration. This to contrast the common practice where music ‘reinforces’ pictures. For the film- and videomakers this task seemed to impose a real challenge. How does one escape the well-worn paths of an unambiguous image – sound relationship? What are the different approaches? Does one choose the possibility of an ’emotional’ path, where one focuses on a particular atmosphere? Or does one think in a conceptual or – even – technical direction?
