residency
Lawrence McGuire, Andrejs Poikāns & Cis De Gendt
30/06/2025 - 26/07/2025

During the residency period at Q-O2, the trio of Lawrence McGuire, Andrejs Poikāns, and Cis De Gendt will collaboratively investigate the interpretability of text scores in the context of contemporary sound performance. Together they would like to explore the non-symbolic notation systems from performance history, studying and reenacting selected scores from the archives of Fluxus, Wandelweiser, Contemporary Composition, and Sound Poetry, amongst others. Furthermore, they are interested in extending and practically researching the possible intersections of those to recent ideas found in algorithmic music and electro-acoustic improvisation. The research period would further involve activities of daily discussions on (self-written) scores, performing them, and eventually documenting our interpersonal scopes with regards to experiences in performing these textual instructions in various formats. This would include strategic playfulness with different media, including the use of playback devices, daily objects, microphones, speakers, and computers, with a focus on challenging their conventional uses within a collaborative performance practice, and embracing the broad spectrum of mundane rational sequences of actions.

Lawrence McGuire (b. 1997) is a composer based between The Hague and Brussels. As an overarching constant in his sound activities, vocality, including its production as well as perception, is the main topic of his experimental practice: His work can be situated somewhere on the continuum of computer music and sound poetry. As an audio programmer, he recently developed the vocal synthesis program ‘NKOAPP,’ which he now uses in various live settings, with or without his own voice. Aiming to use the synthetic as leeway to investigate psycho-linguistic and acoustic phenomena. And recently, also including his own voice in live performances interpreting elements found in various oral performance practices. Lawrence also performs and produces under the monniker hogobogobogo and runs the internet label i.u.

Andrejs Poikāns (b. 1999) is an artist and researcher from Riga, Latvia. He works with sound. Mainly this manifests through the creation of idiosyncratic computer programs: sometimes for sound synthesis presented through the form of a concert or a composition, at other times it results in a performative lecture, or a script for scheduling long durational text-based instructions for an audience to engage with either using the calendar or the universal clock as a reference. As a researcher he is fascinated by the topics of psychoanalysis of listening, algorithmic music and philosophy of language. Andrejs is currently based in Berlin, Germany. He regularly performs live computer music and occasionally makes sound for theatre. He enjoys writing on a daily basis, usually diary entries.

Cis De Gendt (b. 1999, Bree, Belgium) is an artist-organizer and performer currently based in Den Haag. His interest lies in creating (or contributing to) situations informed by how sound/music is embedded in our everyday auditory experience; playing in his own practice with the aesthetical potential of playback and recording, amplification and performance, while thinking about choreography, attention, the participatory aspect in listening, and the beauty of the mundane, the accidental and incidental. Cis works with these interests in a twofold practice, working with the different perceptual effects of the event and its representation and the potentials that come with the recording or the performance format; thinking about their common demarcations – but also the instability of those. Cis furthermore runs default den haag: a non-profit curatorial initiative focused on the presentation of creative contemporary sound and performance in the Hague, curating and organizing their nomadic sound series with an international focus on experimental music and sound art performances since 2022, next to occasionally hosting accompanying talks and lectures -more information
