PAPER TRAIL – Exploring an Alternative to the Printed Score.
Compositions by Johnny Chang & Rishin Singh
Johnny Chang : aural score (pre-recorded sound)
“Stories My Grandmother Told Me” – performer, Rishin Singh
Growing up in Kaohsiung, my grandmother used to lay out wet tea leaves for drying on the fifth floor of our family home. Once dried, she would then fill up her pillow with these used tea leaves.
Rishin Singh : aural score
“The Stymphalian Birds” – performer, Johnny Chang
The myth of Heracles’ Sixth Labour, as well as a partial exegesis of it by Robert Graves, was recounted to the performer. The performance can be understood as the continuing oral transmission and ritual re-enactment of this myth dating back further than two and a half thousand years.
Rishin Singh : object score
“simult/hierophany” – performer, Johnny Chang
An attempt at reconfiguring the linear plane of field-recording text on a printed page into a four-dimensional sculpture representing the simultaneity of sonic events observed by a listener at any point in space and time.
Rishin Singh : video score
“melody – brussels” – performers, Johnny Chang/Rishin Singh
Found melody, an outsider’s observation of daily patterns in Brussels.
