“Are These Waves” is an experimental chamber opera for two women which questions the relationship between love and death within the apparatus of opera, particularly with regards to female autonomy. The voice is the impetus for a fugal structure which interweaves sound, text, light and movement; a foundation for an abstraction of the dichotomy of oppression and transcendence synonymous with opera. A distilled narrative fragmented by repetition and modification unsettles the balance between perception and reality, and highlights the power of the suspension of disbelief as a tool for the creation of new realities.

A residency project in cooperation with La Monnaie and in the framework of Orfeo & Majnun: La Monnaie’s European project Orfeo & Majnun has been selected for funding by the European Union’s Creative Europe programme.
