Vicky Clarke
"My artistic process explores methods of visualising and uncovering sound. Working with sound as a material that we connect and interact with and how this can evoke feeling, memory and transformation within us. I create physical sound sculptures and installations and weave music production, live loops, field recordings and found sounds to create immersive soundscapes and compositions. I often blend electronic, digital and analogue textures." Vicky is a visual and sound artist whose process explores methods of visualising and uncovering sound. Having studied at Manchester School of Art and the School of Sound Recording (SSR Manchester), she works with sound as a material and historical archive that we connect and interact with and how this can evoke memory and transformation within us. Creating physical sound sculptures and installations; Vicky weaves live loops, digital sampling, field recordings and found sounds to create immersive soundscapes and compositions that involve chaos, chance and interaction and take inspiration from Dada, Constructivism and remix/sampling culture. Blending electronic, digital and analogue textures; she works with found objects, machines and formats to interrogate and amplify the sonic properties of material both real and imagined. Vicky is interested in creating immersive sonic spaces where audiences impact on the sound environment and how humans respond to old and new technologies and perceive the relationship between objects and sound. Recent commissions include Manchester Central Libraries’ Archives+ with the Greater Manchester Sound Archive for LGBT history month where she was the first artist to work creatively with the archives and generate a new soundscape which used new compositional work based on reworked interviews and original recordings and delved into the vast archive of socio-political oral histories, Jodrell Bank space archives and industrial sound recordings of Manchester.  As part of the Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art’s (CFCCA) ongoing ‘Call and Response’ series of sound art events; she devised a live sound performance to accompany a montage for ‘TRILOGIES LIVE by Susan pui san Lok’, which draws on fan uploads of various TV adaptations of Chinese martial art epic novel series, The Condor Trilogy. The piece was performed live at HOME and included live contact mic and sword/bow set up, martial art samples/loops, reworkings and new compositions from archive kung fu material.
