Microphone building – workshop with Maryia Kamarova
27/06/2026 - 14h - 17h

10 participants
No prior knowledge required. This workshop will include soldering, and you’re welcome to bring your own soldering iron if you have one. If you own a portable recorder, feel free to bring that as well.
Register here (€37/€32 – material costs included)

Electret condenser microphones (ECMs) are commonly used for field recording, amplifying acoustic instruments, and other audio applications. During the workshop, participants will be introduced to different types of capsules that form the basis of these microphones, and will learn about their characteristics and powering solutions. Afterwards, they will solder a pair of omnidirectional microphones with a mini-jack output suitable for use with portable recorders. Alternatively they can choose to build a mono microphone with XLR output and built-in power converter suitable for use with any device which has phantom power. Q-O2 will provide the necessary materials, and participants will be able to take their microphones home.

Maryia Kamarova’s practice is situated at the intersection of sound art, performance, and installation. She creates spatial settings and in-situ situations that employ displaced and reassembled objects, embracing material agency and human failure. In her recent work, she explores how sound artifacts emerge across different levels of amplification, while playing with their acoustic presence and its sonified reflection. Often she leads workshops on performativity of objects, scenography and DIY electronics. She performed internationally in Europe and overseas at Sonic Acts, Archipel, Rewire, Reveil, Lisboa Soa and others. She is currently part of Q-O2 art team and lives and works in Brussels.
