residency
04/08/2022 - 31/08/2022

During the residency period I will be working on a process-based piece that investigates the collective memory of Brussells residents and intertwines it with the environmental sounds of the city to weave new and unexpected narratives. It is an exploration of tape recording as a form of memory storage and the deliberate distressing, eroding and deterioration of present day sounds to disrupt their chronology, historicising the present and fast-forwarding the effects of time.

The intention is to create a ‘memory tape’ that acts as an audio portrait of the city and its inhabitants. This activity will involve participation from a diverse cross section of the city’s population asking them to describe the earliest or most vivid memory they have. Through a series of processes that mirror the complexity and frailty of human memory the ‘memory tape’ will be fragmented, corroded, partially erased with magnets, jumbled and finally reconstituted. The question is – through the fog of magnetic memory will the portrait still be recognizable?
