Beginners’ Beginning Sacred Harp
24/03/2026 - 18h - free upon registration

A season of 6 singings

Following on from their first Beginner’s Beginning Sacred Harp workshops at q-o2 and at the Performing Arts Forum (PAF) last summer, Francesca Hawker + Marialena Marouda are instigating a series of 6 Sacred Harp sessions Brussels: as beginners for beginners! Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a keen singer or have never sung before.

Sacred Harp is a tradition of polyphonic shape-note music originating in 19th century Appalachia. “Shape-note” emerged as a way of teaching people without any formal musical literacy, and without any shared doctrinal commitments, to sing quickly and in large quantities. In shape note singing, the pitch of the first note of a song is defined by the community of singers, giving it a uniquely communal character.

Each session will be spent collectively tackling a few songs from a pre-prepared selection of more accessible songs from the Denson 1991 edition songbook. If you are familiar with Sacred Harp and have a favourite song, feel free to share it via email and it can be added to the selection.
