During MIA #2: Luke Fowler and Alex Reynold will examine the creative potential of sound through discussion, case studies and listening sessions. They will unfold their concepts and process as well as sharing their approach and strategies towards sound editing and recording. Discussed topics span from deciding on suitable microphones given a certain situation, the cinematographic qualities of sound and the way a microphone can colour the sound, field recording and working with a sound engineer, among others. The workshop aims to develop the sensitivity of working both technically and creatively with sound.

Q-O2 will host the second edition of the Moving Image Atelier (MIA), a series of 1-day workshops for artists and filmmakers working alone or with small crews in the undefined territory between cinema and visual arts. Each workshop examines a specific technical dimension of audiovisual production like image, sound, and editing to strengthen artistic control and technical autonomy throughout the creative process. Participants will work with experienced practitioners with insight in the artistic process and artists with expertise in the technical dimensions of filmmaking.

Luke Fowler is British artist, filmmaker and musician (1978). He has developed a practice that is, at the same time, singular and collaborative, poetic and political, structural and documentary, archival and deeply human. With an emphasis on communities of people, outward thinkers and the history of the left, his 16mm films tell the stories of alternative movements in Britain, from psychiatry to photography to music to education. Whilst some of his early films dealt with music and musicians as subjects, in later works sound itself becomes a key concern. Fowler lives and works in Glasgow.

Alex Reynolds is an artist and filmmaker living in Brussels and Berlin. Honing into the intersection of portraiture and fiction, her films explore the expansive and invasive potential of point of view, empathy, and rhythm, often walking the line between tenderness and violence to insistently ask: how to live together?

MIA is conceived and organized by elephy. The workshop is a collaboration between invited speakers and elephy artists who also serve as moderators for each event.

Lunch*: Paso a Paso (2019) by Martha T’Hooft

Lunch is provided for all the participants of the Hands-on session by the artist and cook Martha T’Hooft.

Paso a Paso (2019) is a social and artistic project in which food is used to make central American migration negotiable and where the focus is on the universal necessity of food in all its forms. The work started in Mazatlan, Mexico with Las Patronas, a group of women who cook daily for passing migrants. The work became a collection of recipes and pictures that result in a cook-look-book and foodstand. The project can be seen as a trip through a no man’s land of culture, language, religion, origin, customs, taste, that symbolizes the wanderings of migrants.
