residency
01/09/2018 - 23/09/2018

This residency is called “Europe – eArope. A sonic expedition into Bruxelles”. Brussels is not only a city where people live, but also a place where Europe is “made” and “heard”. It includes not only the sonic environment of its architectural landscape with its inhabitants, but also the sounding traces of the European Government, countless livestreams of meetings and declarations in many languages, tons of translations, as well as European rules and laws about sound and noise in our everyday surroundings. What do we hear of Brussels and how does what we can hear of “Europe” in a broad sense communicate with the concrete perceptions of the city and its activities? Which codes, genders, aesthetics does this sound represent? Can we hear possibilities or discriminations?

In a series of interventions that can be sound collages, texts and performances, Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka will explore this topic, incorporating not only documentary aspects (fieldrecordings, sound material from the public livestreams of the EU), but also encounters with local people, collaborations with other artists as well as with people working in and for the EU institutions.
