Are These Waves is a new chamber opera for two sopranos and choir, realised in collaboration with La Monnaie/De Munt. The work illuminates the fantastical relationship between love and death in opera, particularly in relation to the fate of women. Voice is the impetus for a structure which interweaves text, light and movement. A distilled narrative, fragmented by repetition and modification, unsettles the balance between perception and reality, highlighting the power of the suspension of disbelief as a tool for the creation of new realities.

Are These Waves will be performed by sopranos Anne-Kathryn Olsen and Carine Tinney of graindelavoix, and members of the Brussels Brecht-Eislerkoor who have collaboratively contributed to their text and been instrumental in the development of the techniques they use.
