The Aronia M. Overture

This residency is the first stage in the development towards the first “Aronia M. Overture”, the attempt to assist the Aronia Melanocarpa (Chokeberry) in expressing its essence and the relations to its ambient environment: a former Soviet plantation on the edge of a Latvian village that since 1991 transformed from a monoculture into a more biodiverse ecosystem.

Since 2009 artist/researcher Bartaku (Bru) annually explores and develops the narrative of the 1Ha Aronia M. Plantation (1HAMP) as part of his ongoing research “PhoEf: The Undisclosed Poésis of the Photovoltaic Effect”. In 2013 he met composer Ruta Vitkauskaite (Lit) and sound artist Karl Heinz Jeron (Ber), and asked them if they would be interested in creating the Aronia M. Overture.

During the Q-O2 residency the existing thoughts will be elaborated and refined:

The reason of composition – to introduce Aronia M. making it’s qualities speak through musical gestures and musical expressions. F.i. translate the astringency of the berry that dries out mouth and closes the throat (hence, chokeberry) through the use of extended singing techniques for the creation of dry sounds…

A key role is played by Karl Heinz’ Aronia Dripping Machine that makes use of contact and noncontact methods for measuring electric fields and the internal processes of the plants. The Aronia Sonification introduces a number of unspecified processes in the berries which create an orchestrated aletoric audio piece (prototype https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-MH34-rd8E)

The Aronia M. Overture will be first performed in Aizpute during the Aronia harvest period in September 2014.

Aronia berry sonification by Karl Heinz Jeron

I will make use of contact and noncontact methods for measuring electric fields and the internal processes of the plants. The Aronia Sonification introduces a number of unspecified processes in the berries which create an orchestrated aletoric audio piece.

Musical Instrument

In addition to the chance aspect, the installation will be extended with a sort of a keyboard to be playable by a musican. I think of two layers. One will provide the possibiulity to play tuned tones and the other one will be a random tone layer. Depending on a musical score or the musican’s decision the random tone layer can be applied to the tune layer manually or could be played autonmously.

Soundscape

According to the the internal electro-chemical state of the Aronia berries, the sound, the colour of the sound, and the volume of the sound are varied. Thus, an improvised piece of music is created from electronic components connected to the Aronia berries. The goal is to increase possibilities to articulate variations in noise and develop musical-acoustic qualities of plants for a concert.
