residency
19/06/2022 - 18/07/2022

I grew up in Taiwan, and received my arts education in Australia. I moved between Australia and Taiwan over four times in the last twenty years. I often reflect on how my thinking framework shifts with my immediate context, influenced both by the language and social structure I sit within. During the residency, I will record various in-site performances, and compose a series of works based on Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”. I will first develop poetic scores, with words taking from the original text, from Alice’s embodied experience of displaced, hallucinating, and transformed.

From Taiwan to Belgium, like Carroll’s Alice, I enter a world inside a dream or a looking glass. The environment seems familiar yet the logic is different. Each meeting with another being or space, they all have their parallel existences. As a visitor, I seek for those familiar yet strange connections by vocalising with curiosity. I hope to embrace Alice’s passionate interactions and questions to greet the social lives. I hope to find various locations to improvise and record within, creating a blurry line between non-fiction (natural and environmental) and fiction (man-made and societal). To fill the space with vocal sound, is to highlight and shift perceptual existence of the space, and to evoke a parallel consciousness from our everyday. The compositions will then be worked on from the in-site recordings.
