residency
11/03/2019 - 31/03/2019

During this residency Adela Prochazkova will follow up her long term interest in theory of listening and sonority of urban paving. The residency project will focus on further conceptual development of Henri Jacobs’ palimpsest paved on the promenade of Molenbeek canal which will be extended by creating sonic palimpsest of Molenbeek district with the aim to portray the multi-layered testimony written in local paving over time. Pavements and roads mediate the only essential physical contact of a person and a city and serve as a platform for sound events happening on their surface. Materials used for their surface reflect the aesthetic and material preferences of different epochs and sites, cobbles speak of the geological surroundings of the area and paving has the ability to form cultural heritage of city. Stone, as a natural material which has been used for paving since Ancient Egypt, is also an important cultural phenomenon accompanying the everyday life of a person with significant place in language, art, spirituality and imagination. Through historical and empirical research, recordings and statements of local community members the sonic ambiance of Molenbeek shaped by local paving will be during the residency investigated and documented.
