During his residency in Brussels, Ian Mikyska has been working on a solo performance concept with the working title “Not Everyone Wants Banjo”. He uses the banjo as a resonator, its strings excited by electromagnetic vibrations and prepared with various metal, plastic, and wood implements. The goal is not to perform, not to put forward the individual ego of the performer, but rather to find situation and contexts in which the materials can develop and display agency. The result is a mix of earthy drones and microscopic theatre.
