Willem Styfhals speak about Canonization and Listening in the Late Age of Mechanical Reproduction (20 minutes)

Ever since the invention the gramophone record, music has been reproduced on a massive scale. Today, however, we do not just live in an age where everyone has access to music through these records but where everyone potentially records and produces music too. In view of the vast amount of releases and recordings that are available we inevitably have to choose what and what not to listen to.

One could ask whether there is an aesthetic standard that could orient us in making these choices. If so, what would the nature of such a standard be? Traditionally, this standard exists in the idea of a canon and is communicated by the critic. But maybe one could conceive non-traditional ways of selecting the music that we (want to) hear. Are there listening strategies that deconstruct the very idea of a canon? In short, is there an avant-garde approach to listening? And how would such avant-gardist or experimental listening relate back to the musical practice itself?
